captions are much smaller then body type

How do you choose your font?

  • getting familiar with spaces, negative and positive space
  • The shapes the font creates
  • how it fits in with your book
  • contrast between thin and think, curves of a font

(example: Elephant magazine)

Layout-

10/12 characters

use negative space

use columns

Bigger typeface, bigger line space

Smaller typeface, smaller line space

WORD SPACING (Kerning)

Alignment

orphans- leaving last word of a paragraph by itself

use margins and negative space to create tension

Lesson Overview:

Today , as a class we discussed the design of the book. we chose the layout, style and typography although we have not finalised the final copy of the pages, we have a rough idea. This has helped me to think about my images and how I can use this layout to support my images that I have taken.

I feel that this lesson was benificial, as it has helped to think about how it might work for me and have a better understanding of the development of the book.

I particularly enjoyed the talk  as it has helped me understand design better, in another perspective of a graphic designer which was interesting as I will be able to use this knowledge for further practices.
